The Arapaho Tribe

History and well known members

  • During the 1700's the Arapaho tribe moved south,aquired horses and lived in a normadic life style.
  • They split into the northern and southern regions.
  • During the 1800's an alliance was made with the Sioux and the Cheyenne.

  • In 1865, 1,000 warriors of the alliance attacked a town called Julesburg in retaliation for the sand creek massacre.
  • Niwot, Little Raven, and Chief Sharp Nose were well known members of the tribe.

Transportation and Housing

  • The Arapaho used something called a travois, which was like a sled. These were pulled by dogs were typically used to move goods.
  • Once the Europeans introduced horses the Arapaho were known to be experts at riding.
  • They lived in tepees made from animal skins and large wooden poles.They were 12-16 feet in diameter at the base.
  • The tepees also had a hole at the top and were typically cone shaped.

  • They were very Religious and everyday items like necklaces were religious.
  • They practiced sun dance and their social organization included military and religious society.
  • They used to speak the Algonquain language, today they speak English.

  • They ate deer, buffalo,elk, and wild turkey. They also ate spinach,prairie turnips,and potatoes.
  • They wore clothes made from deer and buffalo skin. They were painted and decorated.
  • Women had two braids in their hair.

  • They were at war multiple times with the Shoshone,Ute, and Pawnee multiple times.
  • The Cheynenne and Arapaho had a good relationship.
