After defeating the Sosso Empire in the Battle of Kirina, Sundiata Keita, also known as the Lion King, decided to start a country called Mali. Throughout the 1200's, Sundiata started to expand his empire and even take over the entire gold and salt trade.
During the 1300's, Mansa Musa controlled Mali. Mansa is one of the most well known rulers of West Africa. During his reign, he decided to travel across West Africa to Mecca. On his way, he would hand out gold, like candy on Halloween, to peasants and servants and anyone who wanted it. In some places he even devalued gold there becuase of how much he gave out to people.
After Mansa Musa's reign there was a new ruler by the name of Mansa Suleyman. Suleyman continued to expand the empire and, after the success of Musa's journey, established Timbuktu as as a center of Islamic scholarship and learning. But after his death is when the Mali empire began to decline. There were many internal conflicts, rebellions, and attacks by neighbouring states that weakened the empire.
During this period the Mali empire was at its all time low. The new ruler, Sunni Ali Ber, decided this empire was too weak. So he made the Songhai empire which would absorb the Mali Empire.
Right around this time is when the Songhai empire fell. Which ment the Mali empire that was absorbed into it 100 years ago has fallen. The Moroccans had invaded and taken over around the year 1591. This would mark the start of a new era, the era of European colonialism in West Africa.
