Liveability

Liveability

Definition: the features that create a place that people want to live in and are happy to live in.

Combination of natural and human made factors help us make a judgement about a places' liveability as well as what we personally hold important at a given time.

1. What is liveability?

Brainstorm/Discuss:

What features do you think are important when determining a place's liveablity for you?

(Compare this to an older person, say your grandparents)

Who says which is the most liveable place?

Liveability is very subjective. It used to be measured with looking at a countries economic growth.

BUT

There are other measures to help explain liveability:

1) The Economist Intellegence Unit (measures a city's liveability)

2) The Human Development Index (measures a countries liveability)

3) Other indicators - The sustainable economic development assessment

Who says its liveable?

The Economist Intelligence Unit

The index covers the following categories:

  • safety (rates of crime, terror threats and civil unrest)
  • healthcare
  • culture and environment (religious tolerance, corruption, climate and potential natural disasters
  • education
  • infrastructure (transport, housing, energy, water and communication
  • economic stability
  • recreational and sporting facilities
  • availability of consumer goods

The Human Development Index

2. The Human Development Index

Is a hybrid indicator that measures health, knowledge and standard of living (SOL) for a country

  • Health is measured by life expectancy
  • Knowledge is measured by years at school
  • SOL is measured by Gross National Income per capita

The overall combination of these categories gives a score from 0.0-1.0

Yes there are lots of other indicators to predict liveability here are some examples

3. Are there other indicators?
