What is a star, and how many are there?

Do you know what a star is? Well a star is actually a fixed bright shining point in the night sky that is a large beam of light which is a result of being heated, like the sun. There are approximately 250 billion + or - 150 billion stars in the Milky Way, which is our galaxy.

You might think the sun is the largest star, but it really isn't. The biggest star that we know of is actually the VY Canis Majoris, though you probably haven't heard of it. Did you know that there isn't just one galaxy in the universe? The estimate of galaxies in the universe is 100 billion, but is likely to increase to 200 billion when our telescope technology improves.

The sun is actually the closest star to the earth. All the planets in the Milky Way slowly move in a circular orbit around the sun. Since I told you the about biggest star why not tell you the smallest star. Which is the OGLE-TR-122b. It's actually only 20% bigger than Jupiter. I’m guessing you might be thinking, “Only”. But compared to the other stars it's small.

The Milky Way

Do you know why the Milky Way is known as "The Milky Way". You might think, ¨ it´s named after a candy bar". But the real reason is because of a greek myth about the goddess Hera who sprayed milk across the sky.

I hope you enjoyed!!!
