Arsenic Drum Spill

What Happened?

On January 5, 1991 a coastal storm swept approximately 540 hazardous drums off a ship that was headed to New York. The drums were filled with a very toxic substance that is known as Arsenic Trioxide.

What is Arsenic Trioxide?

Arsenic Trioxide is one of the hazardous components of many insecticides, herbicides, and wood preservatives, it can also be used when treating cancer.

After this event, the water was heavily polluted for a very long time.

About 50,000 tons of Arsenic Trioxide are made each year

Who did this event affect?

This terrible event didn't only heavily effect the Marine life but it also effected tons of people between New York and Baltimore.

This spill was so large it could have killed half of our US population.

A ship bound from New York that was made for the Dundalk Marine Terminal was swept up by a coastal storm, the strong winds swept the drums into the ocean.
