This testimony is very significant as it is supposed to have the most ethos as he is the Sheriff of Maycomb. This would mean that his information would also have a ‘logos’ effect on people as all of his information would have sounded more factual to the jury as his judgement would overrule Mr. Ewells or Mayella's testimony, since, again, he is the Sheriff of Maycomb; a title that comes with credibility; The following quote... is what I believe is the most important part of this testimony as it shows how Heck realizes what actually had occurred that night NOT what Mayella and Ewell claimed.
“... black eye comin’ … that’d make it her right. It was her right eye, Mr Finch. I remember now, she was bunged up on that side of her face….” “Mr. Tate blinked again, as if something had suddenly been made plain to him …As if by instinct, Tom Robinson raised his head… Something had been made plain to Atticus also, and it brought him to his feet.” (Lee 225)
Heck doesn’t use any cold hard evidence during his testimony and just gives what Mr. Ewell had said to him. He doesn’t display evidence that Tom raped Mayella. This shows that he is unprepared for the trial and is almost winging it. He also gives incorrect facts to Atticus at first, which also shows that he isn’t an organized person and that he gets anxious. When Atticus asks which part of Mayella is bruised and beat up. Heck answers, “Her left.” Atticus then asks the question again and Heck answers, “It was her right eye , Mr. Finch. I remember now, she was bunged up on that side of her face…” (Lee 225) He thinks his answer through, then looks at Tom and realizes that Tom didn’t beat her because Tom couldn’t have beat her right side with his right hand. Heck doesn’t say anything about his realizations which could show he is racially biased.
-During Heck's testimony, Atticus makes sure to ask Tate specific questions to make sure he is speaking the truth.
-For example, Atticus asks what side Mayella’s bruises were on, Heck responds with her left. Then Heck changes his answer to her right realizing that if Mayella was facing her it would be her right.
-The little detail about which bruise was on which side of Mayella’s face basically proved that Heck Tate was speaking the truth.
Scout took as much information in as she could while remaining calm, in contrast to Jem who was very nervous. The author's style of this chapter doesn't include much of Scout's opinion, and this highlights the facts of Heck Tate's Testimony even though it is read through Scout, a child's, perspective.
Heck Tate utilized logos because he is a sheriff and has to keep his reputation and be honest. By the end of his testimony, he realized that he might have made a mistake because the final fact supported Atticus.
Heck Tate ends up telling the truth so this is good for Atticus to make use of it. Atticus especially uses Heck Tate's fact of the injury on the right eye because Tom Robinson couldn't have hit Mayella on her right eye.
