Biological Samples

Science

A human biological specimen is any material derived from a human such as blood, urine, tissues, organs, etc

Blood

Whole blood can be stored at 4–8°C for up to 24 hours before the serum is separated, but it must not be frozen. Cryogenic freezer storage is often deemed the gold standard for long-term storage of biological samples. At these extremely low temperatures all biological activity is suspended and no degradation occurs. Cryogenic freezing is ideal for sensitive samples and specimens which cannot be suspended in a preservative.

Hair

Hair is one of the most common pieces of biological evidence found at a crime scene and plays an essential role in forensic investigation. Hairs, especially non-follicular hairs, are usually found at various crime scenes, either by natural shedding or by forcible shedding.

-Use a clean pair of forceps to collect the evidence.

-Each group of hair should be packaged separately, sealed, and labeled.

-Avoid damaging any hair root samples.

Clothes

A textile sample is a piece of cloth or fabric designed to represent a larger whole. A small sample, usually taken from existing fabric, is called a swatch, whilst a larger sample, made as a trial to test print production methods, is called a strike off.
