" My search has found one way to treat our disease- and I have acted aleady. I have sent Creon to the prophetic oracle of Apollo, to find out by what action or speech, if any, I may rescue Thebes"
A plague has struck the people of Thebes so Oedipus sends Creon to speak to the Oracle to find out what he must do to be rid of this awful sickness.
"It is to his death that Apollo's command clearly refers. We must punish those who killed him- whoever it may be." (page 7)
Explaination
Creon has now returned from the Oracle and announces the the plague can only be stopped if the murderer of King Laius is discovered and faces their consequences.
"You are the murderer, YOU are the unholy defilement of this land."
Explaination #2
Oedipus calls on Tiresias to tell him who the murdere is but Tiresias accuses Oedipus of the murder. Foreshadowing future events
" A prophecy came to Laius once- I won't say from Apollo himself, but from priests. It said that Lais was fated to die by his son, a son to be born to him and to me." (page 50)
Explaination #3
In this moment, Jacosta and oedipus are talking about the prophecy with eachother. This is completely ironic because neither of them know what is about to happen.
Pages 76-77, all quotes from the messenger saying he found Oedipus in the mountains where Jocasta and Laius sent him to die as a baby after learning the prophecy of their family.
Explaination #4
At this point, the messenger reveals to Oedipus that Jocasta and Laius are his birth parents and that the prophecy is correct and has come true already, despite all their efforts to avoid it.
Quote: "O God! It has all come true. Light, let this be the last time I see you. I stand revealed- born in shame, married in shame, and unnatural murder"
This point in the play is when Oedipus realizes his point of true parentage. He has been piecing the puzzle together slowly and he can know finally see the bigger picture! He is the murderer of his father, the husband of his mother, and the father to his siblings. His life has just been turned upside down. This is the fulfillment of the prophecy.
"Jocasta, our queen is dead" (page 92)
Jocasta now realizes what is happening and puts it all together. She doesnt want to live like this so she kills herself.
" I stabbed out these eyes. Why should I have eyes? Why? when nothing I saw was worth seeing. Nothing."
After Jocasta kills herself. Oedipus stabs his eyes out from dispair because he no longer wants to see the world he lives in, everything has been a lie his entire life. He tells the people to bsnidh him from Thebes.
