GENERAL

CLASSIFICATION

A sinkhole is an underground cavity that has been hollowed out by water, eventually opening up on the surface, swallowing anything that is above its cavity. This particular sinkhole occurred on 30th May 2010 in Zona 2 of Guatemala.

FEATURES

This sinkhole appeared to be triggered by the deluge from tropical storm Agatha. A sewer system may be to blame.

It may get bigger over time. This may be because it is so big that it will need more material to fill it.

It is not the first sinkhole to appear in Guatemala City.

FEATURES

AND

DYNAMICS

DYNAMICS

The 2010 Guatemala Sinkhole caused damage by swallowing up the 3 storey factory that was located above it, and a security guard.

LOCATION

The most dangerous sinkholes tend to occur in Florida, Texas, Alabama, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Pennsylvania, however they can happen anywhere. This sinkhole occurred in the Zona 2 neighbourhood of Guatemala City.

IMPACT ON HUMAN LIFE/ENVIRONMENT

A three-storey clothes factory located in Northern Guatemala was swallowed by the sinkhole, along with a security guard. Authorities said they could not vouch for the security guard’s death. He had been recorded as missing. Police were appointed around the hole to make sure bystanders didn’t fall in. Authorities were treating the site like a crime scene, as the area was cordoned off nearly 20 metres in every way.

HOW SINKHOLES ARE FILLED

This sinkhole has been filled. The graded-filter technique was most likely used to fill this sinkhole. In this method, the hole is filled with a layer of boulders, then a layer of smaller rocks, and, finally, a layer of gravel, allowing the water to drain while filling the hole.

Sinkhole Being Filled

Please Note: This is NOT the 2010 Guatemala Sinkhole being filled.

CONCLUSION

The 2010 Guatemala City Sinkhole has been repaired, however experts predicted that the sinkhole could grow in size, therefore collapsing again. Those who live(d) close to the sinkhole were staying elsewhere for the time being. In the meantime, the residents living close to the hole told Castañón that, they didn't know whether to stay or evacuate. CONRED (Coordinadora Nacional para la Reducción de Desastres, or The National Coordination for Disaster Reduction of Guatemala) hadn't told them what to do.
