Developed based on Chicago's Structure
The first model explain the distribution of different social groups within urban areas in a series of rings.
According ot the concentric zone model, a city grows outward from a cenral area in a series of conentric rings, like growth rings of a tree. The precise size and width of the rings vary from one city to another, but the same basic types of rings appear in all cities in the same order.
1. CBD: central business district, nonresidential activies are concentrated
2. Zone of Transition: has industry and low quality housing
3. Zone of Independent workers' homes: contains working-class homes and modest older homes
4. Zone of Better Residences: contains better residents with new and bigger houses for the middle-class
5. Commuter's Zone: Houses the upper class "suburbs"
Concentric Zone Model
Can be applied to the city and social patterns of Chicago in the 1920s; the same time the concentric zone model was created.
1. CBD - CBD
2. Zone of Transition - Slums, Ghetto
3. Zone of Worker's Homes - Blackbelt, Second Immigrant settlement
4. Residential Zone - Apartment Houses
5. Commuter's Zone - Single Family Dwellings
- Can't really apply the concentric zone model outside of North America because Europe and Asia's cities are set up differently
- First model to explain the distribution of different social groups within urban areas
- Allowed geographers to understand the set-up of cities
- clealy showed segregation of class
The concentric zone is still valid in many areas of the U.S. today. For example, if two families had the same income and ethnic background and one family owns a house and one rents a house, the family that owns a house will more likley locate in or near the outerparts of the suburbs.
Also, many urban cities still have an urban and rural area where rich live in the rural and the lower-class still locate near the CBD.
