a different point of view

  • King Philip II of Spain wanted to restore the Roman Catholic faith in England.

  • Philip provoked by English piracies and raids.

  • The English raided Spain in the Carribean and supported Dutch rebels against Philip II. Philip decided a direct invasion was necessary.

  • Philip would send 30,000 troops and sufficient naval force: the Spanish Armada.

  • Spanish Fleet: 130 ships with 8,000 seamen and 19,000 soldiers.

  • English fleet: approximately 130 ships, less soldiers, more and heavier artillery, and faster and overall better ships.

Dear British Navy,

I am writing to you about the Spanish Armada. You are about to sail into battle against the so called "Invincible Armada". We have prepared for this fight, from the boats you will sail on to the artillery you will use, all of it has been thoroughly revised and is now ready for this great battle. Shortly, my lieutenant general will navigate the waters of the of the English Channel, where we will find the Spanish and defeat them. The Europeans have no right to our kingdom, it is preposterous that they should even ponder the thought of our great motherland. Having full faith in the capabilities and experience of sir Francis Drake, and Lord Charles Howard, I would like to propose a thought for the future. This battle will, by one way or another, determine the world hegemon. This could be our nation's entrance to the new world: the Europeans wouldn't dare attack us if they saw our famous victory over the ''Invicible Armada.''

I wish you luck,

Queen Elizabeth
