Antecedents of Science and Technology in

the Modern Age

Presented by Group 4 & 6

What is Science and

Technology?

Science and Technology

Science is a systematic study that builds knowledge through observations and experiments.

Technology is the application of a set of techniques used for practical purposes.

What makes science and technology important?

  • Connection to people's lives

  • Surpassing curiosity

  • More efficient learning

How does science and technology affect society?

  • Drastically changing the means of communication and lifestyle of people in a positive note.

  • Technological advancement from modernized scientific ideas benefits the society.

How did science and technology develop?

The process of science evolves along with advances of knowledge and technology. Although science and technology is a double edged sword since there is a gain in productivity yet more problems come with it.

Development of Modern Society

  • The growth of the modern society came with the development and improvement of the human's further understanding of science and technology. The development of modern science grew rapidly as many great minds from the past contributed on the discoveries and knowledge that we still have and use today.

The Theory of Relativity by Einstein is still being used as basis in the law of complex physics. Einstein stated simple is as simple as it gets, but no simpler. It is a statement that reflects that in order to understand what need or wanted to be known, a human must adjust and adapt to achieve its goal.

As of today, modern science and technology still grows rapidly through the years and it all started with the help of the development of breakthrough of the internet.

What does modern technology mean?

Modern Technology

Modern technology is basically the advanced era of older generations of technology.

Modern technology involves

systematic research but its outcome

is more concrete that science.

19th Century

19th Century

  • Technological change became quicker in the western part of the world.
  • Steam engineered factories and industries.

Railroads

  • Railroads made it possible for people to have an easier transport when traveling long distances.

Telephones/Telegrams

  • The telephone/telegram made it possible for people to conduct communication across the country.
  • Alexander Graham Bell is best known for his invention of the telephone, for which he received his first patent in 1876

Electric Lighting

  • Electrical lighting and light bulbs replaced candles, kerosene, and gas lamps.

Famous Inventors and Discoverers of the 19th Century

Nikola Tesla

  • Siberian-American engineer and physicist made countless breakthroughs in the production, transmission and application of electrical power.
  • Most notably known for his discovery of the electric alternating current,

Thomas Alva Edison

  • Was an American Inventor and Businessman.
  • Dubbed as America's greatest inventor.
  • Most notably known for inventing the first ever lightbulb.

Alexander Graham Bell

  • Scottish-born scientist, inventor, engineer and innovator.
  • Mostly known for inventing the telephone.
  • He is also the founder of The American Telephone and Telegraph Company (AT&T)

20th Century

  • The relationship of technology intensifies as each step of progress is being closely linked to more advancement.

20th Century

Automobiles/Airplanes

Just like the railroads, the automobiles and airplanes changed the way people travel and gave made it more convenient for the society.

Radio/Television

Radio and television helped people be more aware of what is currently happening in the outside of their homes.

Medicines/Treatments

Knowledge about diseases, treatments, medicines and preventive measures where discovered throughout.

Computers

Computers where made for the convenience of learning and knowledge of technology. Soon transistors made them more powerful and accesible.

Famous Inventors and Discoverers of the 20th Century

The Wright Brothers

  • Orville and Wilbur Wright.
  • Credited for building and developing the world's first successfully flying airplane.

John Logie Baird

  • A Scottish-born engineer.
  • Although the original thought of creating the television was not considered to be his, he is credited as creator of the first television.

Alexander Fleming

  • Was a Scottish physician, microbiologist, and pharmacologist.
  • His best-known discoveries are the enzyme lysozyme in 1923 and the world's first antibiotic.

21st Century & Present

21st Century

  • Improved and organized research and development.
  • Increased production of knowledge through newer technology.
  • More knowledge towards cures of diseases.
