Everyday Uses of Polynomials

By BreAhna Duncan, Leah Mae Sumajit, and Zoya Mukhamedov

Introduction

Introduction

A polynomial is a mathematical expression with multiple terms that are either added or subracted. They also contain a variable, often with different powers. Polynomials are usually composed of variables, exponents, constants and coefficients. There are multiple ways to use these equations in our everyday lives. These include applying it to economics, engineering, budgeting, physics, medicine, chemistry and more.

Economis and Engineering

Economics and Engineering

Economics: polynomials can calculate trends in the stock market.

Engineering: polynomials can estimate the acceleration of rockets. Also, they are used to design structures such as bridges.

Budgeting and Physics

Budgeting and Physics

Expense Budgeting: Everyday people use polynomials to determine how much they will make in a given amount of time and how they should spend it. Businesses also use the formula profit= revenue - cost to budget and calculate their income.

Physics: Polynomials can be used to understand gravity. For example, you could use a polynomial to calculate how a missle would land. This is very useful for the military.

Medicine and Chemistry

Medicine and Chemistry

Medicine: Polynomials are frequently used in the medical field to calculate the concentration the amount of a certain drug a patient should be administered. Additionally, polynomials can be used to calculate the amount of vacant beds there will be in the hospital.

Chemistry: Chemists use polynomials to calculate the compositions of certain compounds and molecules. Some gas equations can also be written as a polynomial

Summary

Summary

It's clear that polynomials are not just restricted to math. They can be used in a variety of other subjects and in daily life. Polynomials are used all the time by economists, engineers, budgeting families, physicists, medical doctors and chemists.
