Substance abuse is the overuse and missuse of a substance.

Tobacco is plant grown for its leaves. The plant contains nicotine. The leaves are processed and put into tobacco products.

Nicotine is a naturally occuring chemical found in the tobacco plant. It is an addictive substance. There are aids, such as Nicoderm CQ patches, that help stop people from smoking.

  • There are more than 480,000 deaths from cigarettes each year. Despite this, about 4.7 million middle and high school students were active tobacco users as of 2015.
  • Cancer can occur anywhere in the human body from smoking. For example, your blood (acute myeloid leukemia), Larynx, Oropharynx (parts of the throat), and Trachea can all obtain cancerous cells from tobacco.
  • Tobacco can cause Stillbirth (death before birth), birth defects, and ectopic pregnancy.

The Truth is a campaign to try and prevent/stop tobacco use in teens. It is also used to inform many about the harmful effects of tobacco.

A colorless liquid that is found in household and industrial products. After processing, some alcohol is safe to consume. This is the alcohol found in drinks. Just because it is safe for consumption does not mean there is no impact on your mind and body.

To prevent alcohol abuse in adolescence, there are many things you can do.

1. Deal with peer pressure (be able to say no)

2. Get rid of stress in healthy manner (excercise, meditation, etc.)

3. Get help for a mental illness that would cause any abuse of alcoholic substances

4. Have your priorities straight (schoolwork before parties that will have alcohol)

The main rule is to be aware of what the impacts alcohol can have on your future.

Alcohol can affect many parts of the body. For example, cancers, brain problems, and liver disease are just a few outcomes of alcohol consumption. Alcohol has temporary and long-term effects on your health.

In America, 7.3 million 12-20 year olds consume alcohol.

8th Graders:

  • 1 of 4 have consumed more than one sip of alcohol
  • 1 of 9 have been drunk at least once

There is one death approximately every 51 minutes in the United States of America involving a driver that is under the influence of alcohol.

Drugs are any substance injested, injected, absorbed, or inhaled that physically and/or psychologically change the body.

  • Prescription drugs are drugs that can only be used with a docor's written permission, but drug abuse still pertains to this category of drug.
  • Legal narcotics are drugs that have psychoactive and sleep-inducing properties.
  • Illegal narcotics are drugs with the same qualities that are not legalized by the federal government or legal narcotics that have been abused.

Drugs can offer assistance to you in case you're sick. They can offer a remedy for a simple cold, or they can minimize cancer cells. If you have a headache, you can take medicines like Ibuprofen. You can also take a new kind of pill that can replace going to the doctor for chemo treatmeants. Although drugs benefit you, they can also hurt you. If you take perscription medicine that is not yours or illegal, it could make you very sick. Also, people who take too many pills could potentially overdose. This could cause death or many months in the hospital.

  • 25% used to enhance studying
