The NRX Reactor was one of the first reactors and in fact was the first reactor to have any kind of meltdown. The reactor first went critical in Chalk Laboratories on July 22 , 1947 in Chalk River Ontario,Canada.
The NRX reactor is a natural uranium fueled reactor that is heavily water moderated, and light water cooled. It was originally a experimental reactor made for plutonium production. After its construction it became more to test out new experimental developments in nuclear reactors and went from producing 20 MW to 42 MW.
NRX is housed in a steel-reinforced brick building
113 feet by 145 feet by 90 feet high. The reactor hall
is serviced by a crane of 25-ton capacity. It has many components including a calandria, graphite reflector and thermal columns, side thermal shields, biological shield, revolving floor etc and was the one of the first high flux- experimental reactors in the world.
The NRX is a very problematic reactor.Chalk Laboratories and NRX reactor had two different incidents that lead to partial meltdowns. One in 1952 and another in 1958
A reactor shutoff rod failure, combined with several operator errors, led to a major power excursion of more than double the reactor's rated output at AECL's NRX reactor.
Due to inadequate cooling a damaged uranium fuel rod caught fire and was torn in two. This was the least damage causing accident even though it caused a fire and their maintenance ventilation was forced open so the poisonous fumes spread into the entire facilities.
Even though this problematic reactor definitely is responsible for thousands of gallons of radioactive water being poured into the river next to the laboratory. It was like I said, an experimental nuclear reactor so there were various testings going on at this facility to strengthen nuclear power globally. Matter of fact, one of the partial meltdowns happened because of a test. The NRX reactor although it had its issues, was a stepping stone for nuclear power.
The first reactor meltdown was not a problem because of nuclear power, it was because of dumb people (doh). Many mistakes were made the day of the first meltdown and it started with a worker opening valves for rods meant to be sealed. Then when stuff went awry, a manager called a control operator to give him instructions to lower the rods into a cooling system. But he gave the wrong directions and instead the operator released the safeguard. The safeguard release made a power output that was set low for testing, start to double every four seconds. At the peak of the meltdown it was said to be producing 80 MW, twice of its capacity The radioactive water seeped onto the floor, and also the calandria began to fill with gases because of the heat and chemical reactions from the rods. The calandria eventually exploded and was took away from the facility and buried. The first floor within a couple of days had a meter of radioactive water. After is was cleaned up it opened 2 year after, And after its second meltdown, it continued to operate for another 45 years.
