1. The Mediterranean Sea is a sea that is connected to the Atlantic Ocean and is surrounded by the Mediterranean Basin.
It is almost completely enclosed by land.
2. Geological evidence suggests that around 5.9 million years ago, the Mediterranean was cut off from the Atlantic and was partly or completely dry over a period of some 600,000 years during the Messinian salinity crisis before being refilled by the Zanclean flood about 5.3 million years ago.
3. It covers an area of about
2,500,000 km²
that is almost 0.7% of the global
ocean surface.
4. The deepest point in the Mediterranean sea is at 5,267 metres in the Calypso Deep that is in the Ionian Sea.
5. Some of the many
countries surrounding the Mediterranean sea include: Spain, France, Monaco, Italy, Croatia, Greece, Turkey, Syria, Israel, Egypt, Libya and Morocco.
6. Ancient Iranians called it the "Roman Sea" whereas in Classic Persian texts it was called
"Daryāy-e Rōm".
7. Some large islands in the Mediterranean sea are Cyprus, Rhodes, Samos, Sicily, Malta, Majorca and Menorca.
8. The typical Mediterranean climate has hot, humid, and dry summers and mild and rainy winters.
9. It is estimated
that there are more than 17,000 marine species in the Mediterranean Sea with mostly higher marine biodiversity in coastal areas and continental shelves which decreases with depth.
10. It has bottlenose dolphins, sardines, swordfish, Mediterranean monk seals, turtles and many other marine species.
11. There was a resident population of killer whale in the Mediterranean until the 1980s, when they officially went extinct!
