The Ancient Olympic Games

History and evolution

The ancient Olympic Games began in Olympia, Greece, in 776 BC and took place every four years until AD 393. They were initially a one-day event, until 684 BC, when they were extended to Three days.

In the 5th century BC, the Games were extended again to cover five days.

1. The games were to honour Zeus;

2. There were no team sports;

3. There were no medals;

4. Women could not compete;

5. The games became hugely popular.

The first written records of the anciente Olympic Games date to 776 BC, when a cook named Coroebus won the only event-a 192 meter footrace called the stade (the origin of modern stadium)- to become the first Olympic champion.

Origin

Legend has it that Heracles (The Roman Hercules), son of Zeus and that the mortal woman Alcmene, founded the Games, which had become the most famous of all Greek sporting festivals.

The ancient Olympics were rather different from the modern Games.

There were fewer events, and only free men who spoke Greek could compete, instead of athletes from any country.

Competitors swim around in a pool throwing a ball.

A ball is hit back and forth until one player is unable to complete a return shot.

Game played bwteen two teams of five players in which goals are socred by throwing a ball through a netted hoop.

Who organises the Olympic Games?

The host city´s Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (OCOG) is in charge of organising this great event.

New Olympic Games

This Committee is created 7 years before the games to start all the process.

Tokyo 2020

From April 2017 to March 2019, small electronic devices including donated mobile phones that were collected to produce the Olympic and Paralympic medals.
