This video provides a good overview of the Vietnam war.It features and exhibition that shows people what it was like during the Vietnam War. It also provides images of life during the war.
The War left many lasting scar on the soldiers. Many needed surgery and treatment for their injuries. Many were diagnosed with cancers and deadly viruses. And even though they had risked their lives in the war, people looked down on the soldiers. Some even spat on them and called them 'baby killers'.This made the veterans think their sacrifice was entirely pointless. This led to a drop in some the veterans' self-esteem.
Upon their return, the veterans were treated poorly and looked down on.This made them think their sacrifce was pointless and that they had just wasted their time.
Many of the soldiers needed medical treatment upon their return. However, treating the soldiers became very difficult.Transfusions that were needed to help treat the patients, were infected with viruses.Drugs that needed to be injected into the body increased the risk of Hepatitis C due to the unsanitary conditions. Many veterans didn't even know they had Hepatitis C since it developed very late. The biggest thing they suffered was Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD.Doctors didn't recognize it and it wasn't accepted until 1980.
The Vietnam war greatly impacted the citzens and children living in the affected countires. Many of which, sustained terrible injuries. Several were from chemicals used during the war.
People who survied bombing never forgot it.Some said it was like an earthquake, others said it was like lightning. If the explosion from the bomb didn't kill you, the blast from the concussion could.
Many children were killed or terribly injured during the war. Some were hit with chemicals like Napalm, which is designed to burn thorugh flesh.Several were left with mental and physical scars.
Back in 1969,scientists conducted a study on Agent Orange. It was an herbicide used by the U.S in Vietnam. They found that it caused birth defects in animals. This led to them studying and making sure it didn't cause the same result in humans. They examined the reproductive history of both partners who were and weren't exposed to the chemicals. They found there was no pattern linked to veterans who were exposed to chemicals. But the result was based on only a few children.
