what causes type one diabetes?

what causes type one diabetes?

Type one diabetes is caused by the immune system attacking cells the produce insulin. This is called autoimmune reaction, it is when the body attacks itself. The cells that are being attacked are called islet cells. They produce insulin. Insulin is a harmone that lets you use sugar from food to get energy. If there is a lack of insulin, glucose increases since you are not able to use it. Isulin allows your body to use glucose in muscles, if you have a lack of insulin, you can't.

what causes Type two diabetes?

There are many different causes for type two diabetes. However, the most common cause is insulin resistance. This is when your body turns food into glucose, so it enters the bloodstream. However, the insulin can't use it for effective use. Then, the glucose isn't able to enter the body the right way, so there is an increase in glucose levels. Other causes include family history. Just because your Mom or Dad has it, doesn't mean you'll definately develop it, it just means you have a greater chance of getting it. Another important factor is lifestyle. This can actually cause insulin resistance.

Can animals get diabetes?

Actually, yes, they can get diabetes. Animals also produce insulin from islet cells. Since animals also have an immune system, it can attack its own body (autoimmune reaction). There could also be a lack of insulin in the animal's body if the islet cells are attacked. This is a picture that shows how not only humans can get diabetes, but dogs too!

Can animals get diabetes?

Why are you interested in this topic?

I am interested in this topic because so many people have it. Also, diabetes has a big effect on the body. I wondered so much about diabetes and what happens when you get it. I also wondered what does it do to your body. That was why I am interested in researching diabetes.

What is currently being done?

Previously, scientists were trying to understanding the immune attack toward the cells in the Pancrea. Those cells are the ones that let you use energy from sugar. They were finding safe ways to block the immune attack.

Currently, according to Joslin.org,"Another importaint effort is directed to regenerating islet cells to produce insulin again." They are trying to produce insulin again using the regeneration of islet cells to use energy from sugar. here is a picture of how islet cells are being transplanted.

What can you do?

Right now, I can donate to any diabetes association. One of them is American Diabetes Association. This association is trying to find ways to cure diabetes, and also better ways to treat it aswell! They use the money donated for different types of things, like insulin. They are also trying to improve lives of people that are affected by diabetes. However when I get older, I can also become an endocrinologist. An endocrinologist is a person who treats diabetes.
