The Flavian Amphitheatre (The Colosseum) - Reviews and Comments from Visitors
The Flavian Amphitheatre, also called the Colosseum, is one of Rome's most iconic architectural masterpieces, and Rome's number 1 entertainment site. The amphitheatre is the largest and greatest in the world, and can hold more than 60,000 people. The amphitheatre frequently showcases various spectacles such as gladitorial contests, animal hunts, executions,
Construction of the Colosseum was started by Emperor Vespasian around 70-72 CE, who intended for the place to be a gift for the people. This gracious purpose and gesture of creating a site for the common people contrasts the purpose of another site located on the same grounds, the Domus Aurea.
Although many amphitheatres are constructed on the outskirts of cities, the Colosseum resides in the very heart of Rome. The Colosseum is constructed of various materials, such as wood, limestone, tuff, tiles, cement, and mortar.
Unfortunately, Vespasian was never able to complete the Colosseum during his lifetime, and his son Titus finished it in 80 CE. When the Colosseum was finally completed, Titus hosted celebrations of gladiatorial games in honor of its grand opening for a hundred days.
Not only do tens of thousands of common people visit to entertain themselves, esteemed VIPS such as the emperors have frequented the games. Years of work have been spent to create this masterpiece, and both skilled builders, engineers, artists, and slaves toiled endlessly to create what we now know as the centerpiece of Rome. The Colosseum is truly for everyone, which is why it is our number 1 recommendation for you to visit first on your trip to Rome!

A quick preview tour: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2CQsMsIxQIY
The Domus Aurea, who's construction was started by Emperor Nero, is the most opulent palace complex in all of Rome. After the fire of 64 CE, Emperor Nero took advantage of the fact that so many buildings had been destroyed in order to begin the building of his new home, which began in 68 CE.
The main purpose of this building project was to provide the Emperor with a lavish and luxurious house and lifestyle, however it was also a part of Nero's project to transform Rome into a new city "Neropolis". The Domus Aurea was the first significant piece of architecture to make use of concrete, and the architects who worked on the construction thought of many creative methods which broke away from traditional Greek architectural design.
Although the Domus Aurea and its decadent splendor was intended to only be for the emperor and the wealthy high class citizens, Laurus Romae is now currently running a special event in agreement with the emperor to allow everyone to visit. Although they are right next to each other, the Domus Aurea can be see as a direct opposite of the Colosseum, since it was created for the wealthy, while the Colosseum was created for the common people. Since these two different, yet equally magnificent sites are right near each other, you can kill two birds with one stione and witness the beauty of both monuments!
