Sophocles was born into a well-to-do family in the deme or suburb of Colono, outside the heart of Athens.
At the age of 16, he was at the head of the chorus that celebrated with a peon the victory of the battle of Salamis, in which Aeschylus also participated as a combatant and which was fought in 480 B.C., the same year in which Euripides was born.
