Inference

Inference: A conclusion or opinion that is reached becuase of known evidence or facts.

An inference involves a reader making an educated guess based on information in a book and their own knowledge. This is not the same as a prediction (a really good guess). A prediction is what the reader thinks will happen in the story and will be confirmed (or not) while reading.

The Mystery of Harris Burdick

You all were making inferences on Monday when you were writing a sentence about each picture.

You used context clues within each picture and came up with with an educated guess based off of the title, description, details in the pictures, and story of Harris Burdick.

This is Not My Hat: Questions.

  • Jon Klassen draws each of the fish with one eye. How does he show what they think and feel?
  • Was the crab an important character? Why/why not?
  • How did the crab influence the story plot (sequence of events)?
  • Why do you think that Jon Klassen used no text towards the end of the book? How does this enhance the book?
  • If the little fish survived, what would it do next? Do you think that it would steal again? Why/why not? What is your evidence?
