~Where is Chimbote, and why we should care~

Chimbote is in Peru and is located in the western part of South America. It's estimated to be about the same size as Alaska. Chimbote faces many problems such as poverty, lack of food and water, poor living conditions, and various health issues . . . and they need YOUR help!

~Chimbote's Surroundings~

2

Chimbote's climate is warm and dry, and is part of a desert terrain. Chimbote is part of the western coast area of South America. It is approximately 4,000 miles directly south from Pittsburgh, PA. It's also located 250 miles away from northern Lima which is the capital of Peru.

~Chimbote's Failing Industry~

3

The government in Peru has 3 branches: the executive, the legislative, and the judicial. Except, corruption is a large problem in Peru and a great boundary remains between the very wealthy and those who are living in poverty. Chimbote has a poor fishing industry which collapsed due to oceanic climate change, along with overfishing and pollution. Peru also continues to suffer its many earthquakes throughout its past years.

~Chimbote's Maternity Hospital~

4

The name of the Maternity Hospital is Maternidad de Maria. It gives care to the mothers in Chimbote. Its care is provided regardless of the mother's ability to pay. The mission provides help to approximately 600-800 people per day. The mission has a pharmacy, orphanage, and a clinic laboratory. In the Maternity Hospital, the 100,000th baby was born on October 20, 2019 at 4:35 pm.

~Chimbote's Important People from Pittsburgh~

5

Bishop John Wright started the mission in the 1960s in Chimbote. He died on August 10, 1979, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He was 70 years old. Then, Monsignor Jules Roos, a Catholic Pittsburgh priest, was assigned to the mission in 1963. He was dedicated to the mission and the poor for over 50 years. In fact, the people of Chimbote were so important to him, that when he passed away in 2013, at age 82, he was buried there with the people he loved and served for most of his life. Sisters Margret Mary and Mary Lillian are Dominican nuns and nurses who worked at the mission in Chimbote for over 50 years and who still work there.
