What are zodiacs?
If you need to know what zodiac is, you need to know what the ecliptic is. The ecliptic is the way the sun moves and the direction of orbit. Even though the Earth moves instead of the Sun it still looks like the sun is moving from our perspective. When the sun is “moving” the other planets follow because of the gravitational force. The ecliptic is 23.4 degrees from the Celestial Equator. Why is this important? That imaginary line (the ecliptic) is basically the zodiac line. Then it is overlapped with 13 different constellations.

Lastly, it is divided into 12 sections which are the zodiacs. You need to remember the constellations and zodiacs have nothing in common with each other but the zodias are named after the constellations. You must be wondering, why are there 13 constellations but only 12 zodiacs? That constellation name is Ophiuchus. Scientists and astronomers say that Ophiuchus is not really on the ecliptic so they say it is not considered a zodiac but many disagree with this theory.

Like the Western Zodiac that I explained about, the Chinese Zodiac is composed of 12 different signs with each persons assigned sign corresponding to when they were born. However, while the Western Zodiac switch out on a monthly basis, each sign of the Chinese Zodiac last for an entire year. It doesn't start at New year ( Jan 1st ) it starts and ends usually between January 21 and February 20 which is one reason the Chinese/Lunar new year was invented. Instead of constellation representhing them, in the Chinese Zodiac, it is represented by 12 different animals.

These specifc animals were belived to to help mankind at he Request of Jade Emperor (in China believed to be the ruler of heaven). In other versions of this myth, these 12 animals decided to compete in a race. (I know it's weird). The 1st place to 12th place is that order of animals in the Chinese zodiac order. The personality of the animal is the same for us humans depending on which animal was the animal of the year of our birth.
