Normative Values for
Outcome Measures
What is an outcome measure?
An outcome measure is a tool to assess a patient/ client's current status.
It can be used prior to intervention to extract baseline data and be performed at regular intervals to demonstrate progress.
Outcome Measures
1. Self-report measures
2. Performance-based measures
3. Observer-reported measures
4. Clinician-reported measures
Common performance-based measures
Performance-based measures
- 10 Metre Walk Test (10MWT)
- 6 Minute Walk Test (6MWT)
- Timed Up and Go Test (TUG)
- High-Level Mobility Assessment Tool (HiMAT)
- Functional Gait Assessment (FGA)
- Five Times Sit to Stand
- 30 Second Sit to Stand Test
- Berg Balance Scale (BBS)
*No data found for spasticity measures
Key:
- Populations:
- Adult (18-64 y/o)
- Community-dwelling elderly (65-80 y/o)
- Mainly neurological conditions
- Values presented in the form ‘mean (standard deviation)’
- IQR = interquartile range
- M = male
- F = female

Walking speed indications
Walking Speed
- Self-selected walking speed has been shown to be associated with certain home and community-based walking behaviours (Bowden et al., 2008)
- A gain of 0.1 m/s is a meaningful change for those without normal walking speed (Hardy, Perera, 2007)
HIGH-LEVEL MOBILITY ASSESSMENT TOOL
HiMAT
FUNCTIONAL GAIT ASSESSMENT
FGA
FIVE TIMES SIT TO STAND (s)
Five Times STS
30 SECOND SIT TO STAND TEST
30 Sec STS
Uses of normative values
- Assess client's baseline function and how they perform against their relevant population
- Determine intervention plan through identifying functional impairments
- Use values to set SMART goals
- Monitor progress over time and compare with 'healthy' population values
- Reduce the time taken to find these reference values during client interactions
Applications
54 F
Initial/ baseline
HOPC: Left pontine midbrain stroke 2/12 ago
Objective outcome measures:
- 10MWT: 16 sec, 24 steps, 0.625 m/s
- 6MWT: 255m
- STS x 5: 15.63 sec from 45cm plinth
Normative values:
- 10MWT for stroke population -> 0.84 m/s and for healthy population -> 1.40 m/s
- 6MWT for stroke population -> 372m and for healthy population -> 494m
- STS x 5 for healthy population -> 5.6 sec
Indications:
- Gait retraining to work on walking speed and endurance
- LL strengthening to improve STS/ functional strength

Upon discharge
HOPC: R parieto-occipital ICH on 30/9/20
Objective outcome measures:
- 10MWT: 8.47 sec, 14 steps, 1.18 m/s (*able to walk comfortably at 1.4 m/s during treadmill warmup)
- 6MWT: 510m
- STS in 30 sec: 16 from 45cm plinth
Normative values:
- 10MWT for stroke population -> 0.84 m/s and for healthy population -> 1.43 m/s
- 6MWT for stroke population -> 372m and for healthy population -> 576m
- STS in 30 sec for healthy population -> 13.7
Indications:
- Good walking capacity, endurance and LL functional strength
