born as Johann Mendel on July 22, 1822 in the village of Heinzendorf in the Austrian Empire.
2. Mendel spent his early years working as a gardener until the local priest recognized his academic talents.
3. He studied
mathematics, physics, and
philosophy at Olomouc
University in 1841 .
4. However during his
studies his family was unable to support him financially and he had to tutor children to meet his ends which also put him in serious depression yet he excelled in his studies.
5. He got enrolled as a monk
with the Augustinian Order of St Thomas in Brno,
and it was here where he changed his name from Johann to Gregor.
6. In 1854 Gregor
conducted experiments on the
transmission of hereditary characters
in plants in the monastery’s 2 hectares garden, whose findings have now become the foundation of genetics.
7. The basic principles
of laws of inheritances
are also one of his most famous findings.
8. His work
was ignored until sixteen years
after his death and only began to the appreciated in 1900.
9. He died in 1884 at the age of 62.
10. The Gregor Mendel Institute
(GM) of Molecular Plant Biology,
which was founded in 2000, was named after him.
