Petrochemical plant explosion

Jilin province, China

What was it?

Resulted in over 100 tons of toxins to be spilled into the songhua river. Toxins include benzene, aniline and nitrobenzene contaminated many rivers that branch off. IT was the largest transboundary spill. (Fresh water shared/crossing a boundary)

What was it?

Cause and people at fault

  • Clog in processing tower of Benzene sector.
  • carelessness of workers trying to unclog it
  • Lack of response by central and regional state authorities

Clean up resonse

  • .Factory officials and local government officials attempted to manage the spill themselves without notifying Beijing.
  • Drain reservoir water into the Songhua river in an attempt to dilute contaminants
  • City officials shut down municiple water systems from river
  • Mass evacuations
  • Government threatened to punish anyone who attempted to cover up incident

WHat is Benzene?

Toxic chemicals known to cause cancer. An odorless, colourless gass form. It breaks down into carbon dioxide and water when burned. Natural processes that produce benzene include volcanoes and forest fires.

Products containing Benzene:

.Paint

.Gasoline

.Glues, Furniture wax, inks

.Detergents

.Rubbers

How might of it effected the environment?

The Songhua river connects to the Amur river, or Heilong Jiang river (black dragon river), the world's tenth longest river that forms the border between far east Russia and northern China. If pollution continued in the river, it would have affected Russia. Not only would the people in China have to be evacuated due to toxic chemicals in their water, but the people in east Russia.

Economic Impact

Damage includes:

  • Pollution destroyed ecosystems and ruined fresh water resources
  • 70% of fresh water in China is polluted

Regulations

No rules have been applied. Global environmental organizations keep check on all chemical plants in China.

Solution

Beijing said on it would commit Rmb10bn ($1.2bn) towards cleaning up last year’s chemical spill in the northeastern Songhua River.
