Environment

Environment

The island is filled with tall trees and consists mostly of a jungle. The area is flat and the tall trees provide shade for the animals habituating the area. The island is off the coast of Brazil. The weather on the island is warm and during the summer seasons it reaches high temperatures and during the winter season it has a low of around 70 degrees.

Changes

The tall trees provide a safe haven for many types of birds and certain kinds of animals. The trees also provide many types of fruits to feed differnt kinds of species. The insect population is great due to the abundance of plants. There is one lake located near the center of the island that houses several types of fishes. The groundlevel of th island is the most dangerous place as it is covered in exposed roots making it easy to fall in the ground.

Changes Caused by the Environment

Animals

Animals

The inhabitants of the island have evolved to endure the environment in which they live in. The tall trees have become homes to most of the population. They have become more hostile compared to the animals on the mainland. The majority of the birds don't hunt for anything and instead eat fruits. The few predators that live on the island havee evolved to have sharper canines and to jump higher.

Bear-Faced Curassow

The curassow has evolved from mostly residing on the ground to going in treetops for most of the time. It does this to avoid the jaguars and other predators that are on the ground. The curassow on the mainland breed on the ground and lay their eggs in bushes, the Curassow on the island have evolved to mating and laying eggs in the treetops. Similar to the mainland they still eat fruits and berries that come from the trees.

Toucan

Tocomo tOucan

Tocomo toucans eat fruits and bugs due to them their elongated beak which allows them to pick out their food more easily. The toucans from the main land don't fly as far and instead prefer hopping. The toucans on Cucumber Island however have evolved to fly longer distances due to the need to fly through the tall trees.

Jaguar

The jaguars on the island are as fast as the ones on the mainland hoever their climbing abilities are far greater. They have evolved to have longer legs, better for jumping longer distances. They hunt different kinds of birds includng the Tocomo Tucan.

Red- Bellied Pirhanas

The Red-Bellied Pirhanas have the same type of physical features as other pirhanas. The one major difference they have is their teeth have longer teeth. This evolution has helped them fight off the stronger birds.

-Population: 350

-Diet: Fruits, and bugs

-Advantagous Trait: They have a longer beak which allows them to get their food easier

Advantagous

Trait: Small bodies which make it easier to reside in trees.

Having a longer beak is more common than the regular Toco toucan, so more toucans recieve that trait and the small beaked toco toucans become useless.

human impact

Human Impact

When first arriving on the island, the group had brought an abundance of fruits with them. The fruit brought with them included strawberries, oranges, and coconuts. When on the boat the leftovers were thrown oveboard however when they landed on the island the pits and half eaten fruits were tossed onto the ground. The group left after 3 months by then the pulp and seeds from the leftover fruits had been planted in the fertiled ground. After 20 years the oranges and coconuts had begun to bear fruit. The wildlife had taken to nesting on the trees and when the fruit was ready to be eaten the birds were introduced to the new fruit were the Bear-Faced Currosaw. The oranges became a new food source for them and many orange trees thrived while the coconuts weren't continued.

Human Inpact Scenario

human inpact scenario

When the group of scientist came back to the mainland they told everybody about the island. With much discussion about what they should do with it, it was soon decided that it will be a toursit spot. Workers came to the island and started to clear out land for the resort that was to be built. When the building of the resort was complete they had destroyed many trees and contained some of the water sources. This affected alot of the animals especially the birds that dwelled in the trees as they were forced to find other places to nest. This caused territory disputes among the animals. When the tourists came to island at last it wasn't long before trash piled around causing more harm to the animals.
