Emoji Linguistics

Definition

Definition

"Semiotically, emoji is a sign vehicle, designatum, and

interpretant relation that produces syntactic, semantic and

paradigmatic emoji dimensions of signs as a linguistic function in

social media communication."

Arafa (2019)

Emojis don’t replace language but provide the nonverbal cues that help us nuance and complement what we mean by our words

Linguists generally agree that emojis aren’t a language, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t important

It can mean a form of pictorial language used to express an idea, an emotion, or an action.

It can also mean a constructed language with a logographic writing system that consists solely of Unicode Emoji.

SDI

Socio Discursive Interactionism

1

Firstly drafted by Jean-Paul Bronckart (1997), the Socio-Discursive Interactionism stands for an epistemological point of view that evolves from the social interactionism movement, affiliated to philosophical and political contributions (from Spinoza, Hegel, Marx and Engels, to mention a few) that has been set up in the first quarter of the twentieth century through the works of Vygotsky (1986) and Voloshinov (1986).

2

This is the framework assumed by SDI: by linking philosophical and sociological contributions (related to such names as Habermas and Ricœur) and bringing to life the novelty of Saussure’s true work, the SDI can be described as a logocentric approach, focused on the core role of language in the development of the human being.

Linguistics Functions of Emoji

Gadgets as an extension of human beings.

Visual language has dominated the communication of internet users on social media and the visual language that is widely used in conveying messages is emojis.

Results

According to MORRIS (1938), 49% of the text used in social media is emojis, and emojis are a more practical visual language used in conveying messages and expressing feelings and ideas.

Various research results state that emoji as a visual language is used to express something (feelings and thoughts).

The results of Jibril and DANESI’s research (2017) state that emojis are used as non-verbal sign language, and face-to-face interactions, as well as one's self-expression that is displayed through emoji language in conversation texts.

Data

Conversations on social media use verbal and non-verbal texts (emojis) to express emotions and explain the sender's meaning. However, the language phenomena found show that emojis not only function as a visual language in conveying emotions and thoughts but have become part of the structure of the text.

Conversational sentences used in social media no longer pay attention to punctuation. However, the sentences end with an emoji as a closing sentence.
