How common is this disorder?

The national ocd foundation reports that about 1 in 100 adults have ocd (2-3 million) in the United States. It can affect any gender, race or background so it can be found in many groups and families

Signs of OCD through obsession

  • germaphobia
  • fear of loosing or forgeting things
  • fear of losing self control
  • unwanted thoughts
  • wanting things to be perfect
  • obsessively picking or scratching

Signs of OCD through compulsions

  • organizing things in a certain precise way
  • repeating things to oneself
  • continuously checking if things are off or doors are locked
  • constantly cleaning or washing hands
  • Body tics or movements

Types of therapy for OCD

Treatment options

  • Cognitive Behavioral therapy
  • Talk therapy to help uncover irrational thoughts and behaviors

  • Exposure and Repsonse therapy
  • Slowly introducing things that trigger obsessive behavior

There is no cure to OCD but there are options that make the disorder managable and easier to live with. Most seek out mental health proffesionals and either get prescribed medication or participate in different therapies.
