The movie/book was great on symbolism. Showing differences and similarites in both stories. In the original story there was Pi, Richard Parker (tiger), Zebra, Orangutan, and a hyena. The storms was also symbolized in the story.
Richard Parker represents Pi. Pi shows resemblence in Richard Parkers survival instincts. Pi had to fight and stratigize to stay alive on the boat. Once Pi became fearless he began to overcome Richard Parker showing his dominance and Richards only way to survive was to keep Pi alive.
In Life of Pi represents the sailor in the made-to-believe story. At the begining of the shipwreck the sailor jumped on to the lifeboat as it was falling into the water and broke his leg just as the zebra did. After that the sailor was unable to do anything so the cook (hyena) decided to kill him for food. The sailor is represented by the zebra by being a prey because him not being able to fight back.
In Life of Pi the mother is represented by the orangutan. While on the lifeboat the mother fought the cook trying to protect Pi. Just as the orangutan fought for his life too. Soon after the cook (hyena) killed the mother (orangutan). The mother shows her instincts to fight for the things she loved.
The cook is represented by the hyena in Life of Pi. The cook was a cold-hearted killer who thought that killing everyone on the boat was the only way to survive. The cook and hyena both had killings instincts. The cook killed the sailor and the mother.
In this story Pi faced numerous storms during his journey. God faced Pi with these storms to show how tough he is. This also showed Pi that there is hope and overcoming these challenges that God is giving you will be worth it.
