Black Lives Matter Movement

Print Media: Books

Print Media

The topic of racism and injustice towards Black Americans is highly prevalent in a school's book list. For Presentation, we are given summer reading to learn the depth of racism and how people in an environment are affected by it. For example, this past summer we were given the opportunity to read Born A Crime by Trevor Noah which addresses his struggle in finding his identity due to his mixed-race appearance.

Quotes

Novel Knowledge

"A mixed person embodies that rebuke to the logic of the system, race-mixing becomes a crime worse than treason" (Noah 85)

"I was everywhere with everybody, and at the same time I was all by myself" (Noah 143)

My Perception

Personal Experience

This medium has illustrated to not only myself but endless amounts of students that systemic racism is not only noticeable in America, but all over the world. Incorporating novels and books on the BLM Movement and the fight against injustice in schools and other educational institutions, shows how younger generations can work to truly make a change and educate others on the reality of our world.

Broadcast Media: Television News

Broadcast Media

In 2020, the Black Lives Matter Movement is bringing a similar reaction as the Me Too Movement created only years before. Due to this, the news is continuing to broadcast questions about race and injustice on the center stage of America. Being able to experience the beginning of these protests, not only in person but on the news, has been moving and revolutionary. Most of the protestors consist of young adults and teenagers, and I felt moved to join and march for justice and basic human rights.

BLM News Stories

These clips are examples of how the news stations would incorrectly portray the purpose of the march and protesting. Their main focus was on views and the violence.

Further Analysis

Further Knowledge

Over the years, the news has been known to change the way society thinks and perceives different information. In an article written by BBC it states the impact the news has on young individuals, "It can increase our risk of developing post-traumatic stress, anxiety and depression." This quote shows that how the news portrays its media can seriously affect society as a whole. How they portray the BLM Movement and racism can drastically change or affect someone's perception on America as a whole too. For awhile, during the protests most news stations would just record the riots and looting without portraying the real message hidden in the rubble. Most protestors and activists were furious because the news was portraying their message as something completely different: just violence and looting.

Audible Media: Music (Songs)

Audible Media

Over the years, many black recording artists have been highlighting police brutality and the implications of racism through music. Artists such as, Beyonce, Usher, H.E.R., and Donald Glover shed light on the injustices at the hands of police and institutionalized racism. Through music, society can experience an opportunity to fully understand our world through audible entertainment. It allows individuals to grasp an understanding of sensitive subjects through the emotions of a complex song.

H.E.R. "I Can't Breathe"

Song Example

"Starting a war, screaming peace at the same time. All the corruption, injustice, the same crimes."

"The structure was made to make us the enemy."

My Perception

Personal Experience

Growing up in a generation filled with music and empowerment, I believe songs revolving around injustice and human rights will always hold a huge impact over my life. Whenever I listen to music, I fully immerse myself into the music and its back story. Being able to decipher the hidden message within the lyrics has helped heighten my need to assist others and show the world what is right from wrong. This type of medium allows younger generations to notice at a young age what systemic racism is and who is affected by it through the power of music and melody.

Social Media: Twitter

Social Media

Twitter was the birthplace of the BLM Movement and remains the primary tool where activists spread their knowledge on injustice and racism. Activists use Twitter to show the public sphere how to educate one's self on the BLM Movement and where to sign petitions, donate, etc. For example, in a paper written by Clayton Davis, the author discusses why they use Twitter, "For BLM activists, social media platforms served as spaces for pro-movement messaging, expressions of solidarity, and reactions to grievances around police brutality."

My Perception

Personal Experience

Most of the young adults in my generation gravitate and obsess over social media and Twitter happens to be involved in the mix. I believe using Twitter in the way activists do is both inspirational and efficient. When I first saw everyone posting petitions and ways to donate, I realized how quickly a generation of people can come together to spark a revolution. Social Media, including Twitter, is an easy way to project your concerns with society and allows most, if not everyone, to use it as well.
