DIAGNOSIS & TREATMENT

Diagnosis

DIAGNOSIS

Initial tests to determine the cause of your gynecomastia may include:

  • Blood tests
  • Mammograms

You may need further testing depending on your initial test results, including:

  • Computerized tomography (CT) scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans
  • Testicular ultrasounds
  • Tissue biopsies

Treatment

  • Clomiphene can be used to treat gynecomastia. It can be taken for up to 6 months.
  • The selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM) tamoxifen (Nolvadex) has been shown to reduce breast volume in gynecomastia, but it was not able to entirely eliminate all of the breast tissue.
  • Danazol is a synthetic derivative of testosterone that decreases estrogen synthesis by the testes.

TREATMENTS

MYTH

There’s a misconception that increasing the amount you exercise or that performing exercises that focus on toning the chest will help the issue. Since gynecomastia is the development of breast tissue, there is no way to burn off the extra tissue.

Coping and support

MENTAL

HELP

  • Get counseling. Talk therapy can help you avoid anxiety and depression caused by gynecomastia.
  • Reach out to your family and friends. Explaining your situation and asking for support will likely strengthen your relationships and reduce stress.
  • Connect with others who have gynecomastia. Talking with men who have had a similar experience can help you cope. Websites such as Gynecomastia.org provide a forum for connecting with others who have the condition.

WHY?

Why Gynecomastia?

I chose this disease because I remember finding out about this disease when I was younger and I found it to be quite odd. I wanted to learn more about it and to opportunity to make this presentation about it.
