Elements of Poetry

What are poetic elements?

Poetic Elements

#1

Poetic elements are the instruments used to create a poem.

Why is poetry so confusing?

Because Poetry is infused with so much meaning

Poetry is meant to be analyzed!

How do we analyze poetry?

  • Look at poetic devices such as:
  • rhythm
  • meter
  • structure
  • tone
  • sound
  • syntax

Keep in mind that while we discuss these elements separately, they are always acting at the same time in a story.

  • They are a series of lines that are grouped together and separated from other groups of lines or stanzas by a skipped line.
  • 2 lines are called a couplet
  • 3 lines are called a tercet

  • Stanzas organize thoughts in a poem

Meter is the...

  • A pattern of emphasis on those syllables

Tone vs. Mood

Tone

  • How the author feels towards the subject.
  • You will know what the author's tone is implying by the words they use.
  • Feeling or the atmosphere that the author has set in their story
  • Tone = Them (the author)

Mood

  • Is the vibe that a larger chunk of text gives you
  • Is what the author makes you feel when you read their writings.
  • Depends on what the reader feels
  • Is usually created at the beginning of the story, so the reader can expect what will happen later on
  • Mood = Me (what you feel about the text)

Syntax...

Syntax

  • Syntax refers to word order, but word order creates certain sounds, images, and attitudes

  • Is the way a writer chooses words, arranges them in sentences, lines, or linebreaks

  • Includes the impact of punctuation

  • Sound has everything to do with syntax
