How does Solar Photovoltaic Work?

Photovoltaic (PV)

Title

Solar photovoltaic is the conversion of light into electricity using semiconducting materials that exhibit the photovoltaic effect.

Photovoltaic Effect

Title

Photovoltaic effect is the generation of voltage and electric current in a material upon exposure to light.

History Of Solar Energy Photovoltaic (PV)

Make

Subtopics

In the 7th century BC, humans figured out how to create fire using the sunlight and a magnifying glass

Horace de Saussure, a Swiss physicist invented the solar oven in 1767.

Title

Title

Photovoltaic effect was discovered in 1839 by Edmund Becquerel, a 19 year old French physicist. He discovered the creation of voltage when a material is exposed to light.

The first Photovoltaic cell was created in 1883 by an american inventor Charles Fritts. His design was based on selenium wafers.

Title

David Chapin, Calvin Fuller and Gerald Pearson of Bell Labs are credited with the world’s first photovoltaic cell in 1954.

Title

They were the first to create a device that converted sunlight into electrical power

Title

Assessment of current use of Solar Energy (PV)

E

Who is currently using Solar PV?

Title

  • Wealthier neighborhoods are more likely to use solar PV on their buildings
  • People who are educated, they understand global warning and is aware of how to reduce this.

Solar PV is not only used on residential buildings, but also on commercial buildings, schools and offices.

Title

Pros of Solar Photovoltaic

Title

  • Low Maintenance.
  • Once the system is installed there is not much to do as it does all the work.
  • The System is scalable
  • Depending on what you what, you can install a single panel or or more

Title

Cons Of Solar Photovoltaic

How to be

Successful!

  • Location
  • Location is very important when it comes to solar photovoltaic, because if there is not enough sunlight then the energy being produced will not be sufficient
  • Seasonal Variation
  • during certain season people might have to by electricity from the grid more

Title

Emerging and Future Technologies

Title

Concentrator Photovoltaic

Title

  • More efficient, It currently has an efficiency of around 20%
  • Requires lens and trackers
  • Requires cooling systems
  • More expensive

Concentrated Solar Thermal Systems

Title

  • based on heat itself rather than the photovoltaic effect
  • CSP systems don’t use solar cells
  • Sunlight is concentrated over a large area with mirror arrays, lenses or parabolic mirrors

Title

Sustainable?

Solar Photovoltaic is pretty much sustainable because all of its energy is directed from the sun

Title

What makes it not sustainable?

Title

The only thing that would make solar photovoltaic not sustainable would be places that do not receive much sunlight. Solar photovoltaic rely on sunlight, so without it, then photovoltaic would not be sustainable.
