Overview

What is sleep?

Typically, sleep is defined as an altered state of consciousness or a condition of the body and mind where in the nervous system is less active, the body is relaxed, and consciousness is not present

In what ways does sleep help you?

Sleeping helps your overall health very much. It affects all types of growth in you body. For example, stress hormones, our immune system, appetite, breathing, blood pressure and cardiovascular health. Sleep can also heal injury and diseases

Cost of not geting enough sleep

If you dont get enough sleep what are some of the health problems

Many of the costs of poor sleep go unnoticed. Medical conditions, such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease, develop over long periods of time and result from a number of factors, such as genetics, poor nutrition, and lack of exercise.

Risks on not getting enough sleep

In a recent study, people who averaged less than seven hours of sleep a night were about three times more likely to develop cold symptoms than study volunteers who got eight or more hours of sleep when exposed to the cold-causing rhinovirus. In addition, those individuals who got better quality sleep were the least likely to come down with a cold.

If you sleep too much can it cause problems

In the general population, sleeping too much was associated with psychiatric diseases and higher BMI(Body Mass Index), but not with other chronic medical diseases.

Compared to the whole group, “long sleepers” were more often female, younger (15–25 year-old) or older (above 65 year-old), with no academic degree, mostly clerks and blue collar workers. “Long sleepers” were significantly more likely to have psychiatric diseases and a greater body mass index (BMI).
