Eugen Wüster (1898-1977)

A little bit of biography...

He was born in small Austrian town of Wieselburg in 1898 and he was named after his father name.

  • Before his father died Wüster sign himself off in notes as EWS - Eugen Wüster Sohn. After his father's death this became EW.
  • In 15 years old he was enthusiastic about Esperanto language.

In 1927 he received his first higher education in Berlin and became an electrical engineer.

In 1931 he submitted his doctoral dissertation (International Standardization of Languages in Engineering, Especially in Electrical Engineering) and his work was awarded with honors.

For the rest of his life, he worked for his family's company (Wüster and Co) and parallelly engaged in linguistic activities, for instance, he taught at the University of Vienna.

He is known as esperantist, engineer, terminologist, lexicographer, terminographer, translator, linguist, bibliographer, language planner, librarian, and professor.

  • He compiled the core of the legendary encyclopedic Esperanto-German dictionary.

  • His research in international technical communication led to the establishment of the Technical Committee for Terminology Standartization (ISO/TC 37) in 1936.

  • Wüster collaborated in the compilation and publishing of the first edition of the International Electrotechnical Vocabulary.

  • The archives of Eugene Wüster at the University of Vienna, as well as at the Esperanto Museum and the Planning Languages Department of the Austrian National Library, are based on materials that he bequeathed.

  • His dissertation was translated into Russian and became mandatory reading for students of terminology in the Soviet Union.

  • He was elected Chairman of the Sub-Committee on Proposals for Multilingual Dictionaries (UNESCO).

  • As leader of ISO/TC 37, he submitted a ten-page document on dictionaries and glossaries outlining the actions to be taken for multilingual dictionaries.

  • He lectured on Lexicology, Lexicography and specifically Terminology Science and Standardization at the University of Vienna.

  • He collected literature on terminology from all over the world known as the Wieselburg collection.

  • After his death the University and City of Vienna sponsors The Eugene Wüster Prize for outstanding achievements in the field of terminological research.

Summary

Eugen Wüster was, in the field of terminology, one of the most influential authors of the twentieth century. Although he died several decades ago, and after years of modest interest in his work, scholars in a variety of disciplines, including information science and computer science, have started to take an interest in his writings. Wüster’s current popularity is due to his role in the development of terminology; his work has had a profound impact on almost all national and international literature in the field of terminology.
