What is Bullying?

Bullying is unwanted aggressive behavior among children.

  • It involves real or perceived imbalance of power

  • The behavior continues to happen or can continue to happen

Bullying looks like this:

Kids who bully use their power to hurt, embarrass, or control others.

What does Bullying look like?

Verbal

A bully may say or write mean things about someone such as:

  • Teasing
  • Name-calling
  • Inappropriate comments
  • Taunting
  • Threaten to cause harm

Physical

Harm

Physical Harm

A bully may attack verbally or physically.

Physical harm can be:

  • Hitting, kicking, pinching
  • Spitting
  • Tripping/pushing
  • Taking or breaking someone's things

Social

Social Bullying

This is when a person tries to hurt someone's reputation or relationships with others. This can be by :

  • leaving someone out of a group on purpose
  • Telling others not to be friends with someone
  • Spreading rumors or embarrassing someone.

Where does bullying happen?

Bullying usually takes place in school such as the playground or cafeteria.

Bullying can also take place on the way to school, on the bus or in the neighborhood.

How often does bullying happen?

  • 1 in 4 students say they have been bullied

  • 3 out of 10 say they have bullied others

  • More than half of of students have seen bullying happen to others and don't report it (Bystanders)

  • Only about 20-30% of students say they report bullying

  • Bullying can lead to the victim felling lonely and depression.

Stand Against Bullying

Don't be a bystandard. If you witness

bullying be an UPSTANDARD!

  • Do Not laugh
  • Do Not encouraging the bully in any way
  • Do Not participate
  • Tell an adult
  • Tell the Bully to stop and tell others to stand up to the bully with you (there is strength in numbers)
  • Help the victim

Reach out to the Bully Victim and be a friend!
