The Angevin Dynasty

Henry II

King Henry II

  • Riegn: 1154-1189 A.D.
  • Known for: Herny II also known as Herny Plantagenet expanded Anglo French Domains and strengthened the royal administration.
  • He is the first of the Agevin kings.

Herny II vs Thomas Becket

Becket Controversy

  • Thomas Becket was Herny's close friend and later chancellor.
  • Thanks to his skill Henry, sought to make him the Archbishop of Canterburry .
  • However, he was not a typical Archbishop, but want to prove that he could be, defying Herny II.
  • This bewildered the king and he eventually asked "Who shall rid me of this troublesome priest."
  • Becket's death came as a shock in December of 1170

  • Herny divided the kingdom amongst his sons while keeping real power for himself.
  • Herny, the young king opposed his father's proposal to find land for John at Geffory's expense.
  • Richard joined the protest supported by their mother Elanor.
  • This revolt gained the support of Louis VII and William the Lion.

  • Queen consort of Herny II of England 1154-1189 A.D. and Duchess of Aquintaine untill 1204 A.D.
  • Eleanor established the legends of the Court of Love.

Louis VII

  • Eleanor was one of the most eligable single women in Europe.
  • Louis and Eleanor were married in July of 1137 and became rulers on Christmas
  • Louis VII and Eleanor went on the Second Crusade, however it failed.
  • Eleanor and Louis grew estranged, and evetually were granted annulment in 1152.

  • Upon being married to Herny II, familial quarrels began.
  • Her son Herny the younger, fled to France plotting angainst his father.
  • Richard would join his brother's protest gaing Elanor's support.
  • This led to division between Henry II and Elanor, and she was arrested for treason.
  • Eventually, she was freed when her son Richard became king.

Richard I

Richard Lionhearted

  • King of England from 1189 to 1199. Son of Herny II and Brother of King John I
  • Known for: The Third Crusade, He didn't spend much time in England at all. He spent his life fighting.
  • Killed by a crossbow wound to the shoulder at age 41

Rivalry with Herny II

  • Richard very similarly to Herny the Younger opposed his father not giving them true power.
  • He joined the protest, and helped them to gain the support of their mother.
  • Although Henry the Younger eventually fell ill and died, Richard and the forces of King Philip II of France defeated Herny on July 4 1189.

  • Richard I was crowned King of England in the Summer of 1189 in Westminster Abbey
  • His first order was to have his mother relased and to have her be a free woman.

The Third Crusade

Crusades

  • Part of Richard's fleet wrecked off Cyprus, the ruler, badly treated the crew.
  • Richard, came back to Cyprus and deafeated Isaac I
  • The crusade continued in Acre in June of 1191, while exctining the citizens at home, it failed to achieve the goal of taking back the Holy Land.
  • While on his journey home, he was captured by the Duke of Austria, and a heavy rason was held for his reaslase.

King John

  • King of England from 1199-1216, the youngest son of Herny II and brother of Richard I.
  • Known for: Signing the Magna Carta, due to making the barrons and church upset. He was Henry II favorite son, because he stayed loyal.
  • John faced a rival to the throne Arhtur, Duke of Brittany, son of Geoffery. However John gained his mother's support and power.

Henry the Young King

  • Henry was King Henry II second son after the death of William.
  • On June 14, 1170 (Though his father's disputes with Becket caused this to be put off until 1172) Henry was named king.
  • However he had no share of his father's power.
  • He, Richard, and Geoffery nearly overthrew their father in 1173.
  • He then waged a war against Richard over Potiou, but died of dysentery while in France.

Geoffrey II (IV)

Geoffrey Duke of Brittany

  • The fourth son of Henry II and Elanor of Aquitaine
  • Geoffrey was betrothed to Constance, daughter and heir of Conan IV, duke of Brittany.
  • He would join his brothers rebillion against their father, but be sent back to Brittany in 1174
  • He died either of illness or in a tournament leaving behind his son Arthur and his daughter Eleanor
