The North-Western Territory

In 1862, the main part of The North-Western Territories was controlled by the British. The North- Western Territory was only claimed by the British because Governor James Douglas and the British Colonies wanted to prevent agitation from the people because Americans were possibly going to claim the land, therefore the British Colonies and James Douglas declared The North-Western Territory a British Territory.

Father Émile was a missionary sent to North- Western Territory to teach the Dene tribe. He had a problem teaching the Indigenous people because of the language barriers. He found a solution to this problem and the solution was creating a dictionary for the tribe.

James Douglas

James Douglas was considered the " Father of British Columbia". He helped establish colonial settlement and also helped with trade an industries on the west coast.

The indigenous people were affected by the settlers that came to North Western Territory, In the following ways. A tiny portion of the North Western Territory was taken and put into the province o f Manitoba also the North-Western Territory was purchased by the Canadian Government without informing the indigenous people of the region. This probably caused the indigenous people of the region to be surprised and angry. Especially when majority of the population in North WEstern Territories was aboriginal tribes including, Dene, Inuit, and Metis.

The North Western Territories kept gaining more land because the boundaries were changing often, for example, Manitoba's boundaries were increased in 1881 took some of the North Western Territories. Another example is when the Arctic islands in northern Canada ordered by the british became part of Canada and were added to the North Western Territories in 1880.
