What happens in the book

The author and his father's stories

Little fingers

Protective pain and Damage pain

Scans prove nothing - more of us have bulges and 'slips' on our discs than don't. Everyone past 20. Most of us don't feel the pain of this.

Most treatment, pain relief, and surgery is not proven to work.

Pain relief and heat and movement

Reminding myself that my back is strong and that I can have confidence in my own strength

Applying what I know works for young people struggling with their nervous system to my pain -

Simply talking to my brain every time I feel a twinge or ache to reassure it that we are safe and have no need for protective pain. No need for a raise in cortisol. No need to be vigilant. No tigers are here.

Breathing deeply and purposefully whenever I can, and whenever i feel pain.
