Assignment

Essay topic

Decide on a topic for an essay. Pick from the list below:

- Why cats are better than dogs

- The importance of music

- Why homework should be banned

- Stress impact on young adults

- Why your school is the best in the city

1. Decide what three aspects about the essay (topic) you want to discuss, analyze or argue in your essay.

2. Divide your essay topic into three parts (body)

Introduction

Introduction

The introduction is the first paragraph of the essay. The function is:

  • To introduce the subject to the reader in an interesting and catchy way

  • to give some background information about the subject

  • To state the main idea or focus of the essay in a thesis statement that will govern the body paragraphs

Example

Example

Shortly after I wake up, I open the newspaper, and right there on the second page is an ad. On my way to school I see ads everywhere, in the bus, in the subway, in my social media. As soon as I get home they are at me again, in magazines, on the Internet, on TV etc.(...) A first thought might be that advertising doesn't seem negative at all. It gives you something nice to look at when you want to kill time. But the question is: How do ads really affect me in my daily life?

Use linking words in your text to help the reader follow the main thread. Also, linking words make the inner structure of your essay clear:

Examples of linking words:

- Order:

Firstly, secondly, thirdly, furthermore, moreover, in addition, finally, lastly, in conclusion

- Result and consequences:

Consequently, therefore, as a result, for example, for instance

- organizing and comparing

However, on the contrary, instead, on the other hand

Conclusion

Conclusion

Very briefly repeat your opinion or main idea and your best argument if you are writing an argumentative essay

Argumentative essay

Argumentative

The main difference between an argumentative essay and a discursive essay is that in an argumentative essay you have to take a clear stand

- Decide whether you are for or against the topic

- In a five-paragraph essay include three arguments and one counter argument

-One argument for each paragraph in the body

- The last paragraph starts with the counter argument which you attack with your strongest argument

- Another alternative is to include four paragraphs in the body.

Assignment I

Pick a topic for an argumentative essay. Here are a few examples:

Why homework should/should not be banned from school

Why alcohol usage should/should not be controlled

Digitalization is good/bad for student's education

Why grafitti should/should not be viewed as art

Assignment II

1. Write three convincing arguments and one counter argument

2. Start with the body. Three or four paragraphs with one argument each. Don't not forget to start with a topic sentence!

Assignment III
