the debate
The origins of fruit snacks are fascinating and unexpected. They were first made by Josephs Shalhoub’s son, who owned a small confectionery in Brooklyn. Louis Shalhoub created the JORAY fruit roll based off the Lebanese treat Amardeen, which is similar to a apricot fruit leather ("This is Our History").
Joseph and son, Louis.
In 1983 General Mills began producing Shalhoub’s product under the name fruit snack. They added much more sugar and began advertised the sweet snack to children ("This is Our History”).

Fruit snacks have immense amounts of sugar and hydrogenated oils. Along with the absence of fiber, protein and healthy fat ( Schmidt, Collins).
But, because so many fruit snack brands look past their many flaws, some brands are under legal action. Welch fruit snacks are an example of a deceptive brand that manipulates their product to appear healthy ("Candy:, Fruit Snacks”).

Welches have 40% of what their made of as sugar and food dyes, and because of this legal action is being taken. A Washington based center of science also accused a General Mills of making fruit snacks appear healthy, when truly, they are barely better than buying packets of candy ("Candy:, Fruit Snacks”)
fruit snacks are comparable to gummy bears and other candies.
Welch fruit snacks include the following ingredients: Fruit puree (Grape, Peach, Orange, Strawberry, and Raspberry), Corn Syrup, Sugar, Modified Corn Starch, Gelatin, Concord Grape Juice from Concentrate, Citric Acid, Lactic Acid, Natural and Artificial Flavors, Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C), Alpha Tocopherol acetate (Vitamin E), Vitamin A Palmitate, Sodium Citrate, Coconut Oil, Carnauba Wax, Annatto (Color), Turmeric (Color), Red 40, and Blue 1) (“Welch's Fruit Snack - Fruit Mix Fun Size”).
Imagine ripping open a fresh pack of fruit snacks, plucking out each fruit shaped gummy and letting it dissolve on one’s tongue. It’s convenient, compact, and sweet. However, is it truly as healthy as it’s marketed to be? Fruit snacks have changed the eating habits of children by adding sugar, dyes, artificial flavors to their everyday diet, and created the expectation for a nosh to be compact and candy like.
The fruit snack is a delectable treat with a rich history. Starting in Brooklyn, New York at a small confectionery, as an innocent nosh. But after it gained popularity hundreds of brands began producing the snack and began adding more and more sugar. Despite a longstanding debate about how healthy this snack is, because children love them, they will continue to be produced.
