What do you guys know about the Bering Strait Theory?

What do you guys know about the Bering Stra...

What is the Bering Strait Theory?

  • The Bering Strait Theory is a theory that explains how people first arrived into North America.
  • The Bering Strait Theory is also known as the Land Bridge Theory.
  • The Bering Strait Theory was first created by scientist and theorist during the 1800s.
  • The events that happened according to the Bering Strait Theory was the main reason why people arrived in North America.

Theories on how settelers arrived in North America

  • Scientist have been wondering how humans got ot North America since the 1500s.
  • There are a variety of creative theories on how people got to North America. Some of these are weird theorys that sound ridiculous to us now.
  • One theory suggest that Noresman crossed here from Greenland into North America.
  • Another theory suggest that the island of Atlantis is the origins of humans living in the new world.
  • Another theory, perhaps this is the most crazy one is that humans and animals generated out of mud.
  • Finally by the 1800s scientist started to finally discuss that there could of possibly been a land bridge that helped settelers across the Bering Strait and into North America.
  • This theory has been around before the 1800s but didnt become known till the 1800s.

The Discovery of the Bering Strait Theory

  • In the year 1590 a Spanish missionary by the name of Jose de Acosta first thought of a theory saying there was a land bridge that connected Asia and North America.
  • Acosta rejected many theories by his companions and he believed that hunters from the north crossed here on some land bridge up north. Acosta thought that this land bridge still existed.

The Discovery of the Bering Strait Theory

Vitus Bering

  • During the 18th century the Russian Czar named Peter the Great created an expoloration of the eastern borders. of the Russian Empire. Peter recruited a Danish Explorer by the name of Vitus Bering. He did this because he wanted him to lead an expidition of the Bering Strait region.
  • Before the expidition started you were able to see a large landmass stretching across the water fom the Chukchi Penninsula on Siberian maps.
  • Berings two voyages, one in 1724 and another one in 1741 confirmed that there was land in between North America and Asia.

Captain James Cook

  • James Cook was an Englishman was the second explorer to confirm the existance of present day Alaska.
  • On his expedition during the year 1778 he produced detailed maps of the Alaskan coast.
  • The results of the exploration really helped illuminate the outside world about the Bering Strait region.

David M. Hopkins

  • He was a geologist at the University of New Hamshire.
  • Hopkins made several key contributions to the study of Beringia.
  • Hopkins studied the vegetation on the land bridge. He thinks that the land bridge had different types of vegetation on it.
  • He worked with many other scientist to confirm the age of plants frozen in layers of ash from an eruption from Devil Mountain 18,000 years ago.
  • This made the discovery of having a more diverse vegetation system on the land bridge then originally thought.

The Ice Age

  • The Bering Strait Theory starts off with the Ice Age.
  • The long periods of time known as the Ice Age truely shaped the landscape of North America and their outstanding civilizations.
  • The Ice Age ended around 18,000 years ago.
  • The Ice Age was when the whole Earth was cover in thick sheets of Ice.

The Ice Age

Glaciers

  • Glaciers are a slowly moving mass of Ice formed by the build up and compaction of snow on mountains.
  • Since these glaciers build up, they absorb great quantities of water which causes the level of the ocean to drop about 400 feet.
  • This causes never seen lands beneath the ocean to appear. An example of this would be Beringia

Glaciers

Beringia

  • Berengia was the name of the land bridge that was lifted by Ice glaciers.
  • Beringia connected Asia and North America.
  • Beringia was a treeless plain but it was 55 miles long and about 1,000 miles wide.
  • Since Beringa had broad grasslands it attracted herds of caribou and bison.
  • Small bands of Siberian hunters followed these animals accross the bridge. These hunters didnt know they were at new land and this makes them the first Americans.
  • These hunters eventually adapted to this enviroment and found the tip of South America.
  • By then the Land Bridge was gone.

Geography of The Americas

  • North America is the third largest continent. The largest is Asia and the second largest is Africa.
  • Stretches from Arctic Ocean in the north to Panama's border with Columbia in the south.
  • Continent includes West Indies and Aleutian islands.
  • The Rocky Mountains are the largest mountain range in North America and they begin in Alaska.
  • South America lies further east than North America.
  • South America is 700 miles from Antartica.

American Farmers

  • The first Americans survivied by hunting and gathering.
  • Then they decided to create a new way of life. They started farm and develop a new way of life.
  • Americas earliest farmers lived in Tehuacan.

Corn

  • People living here learned how to plant and harvest corn.
  • Corn was a very valuable product.
  • A family of three could raise enough products in four months to feed themselves in two years.
  • They called it the food of the gods.
