The character of Rowan Damisch, one
of the main characters in Scythe, was created
through the narative convention of characterisation.
He was a caring, compassionate boy selected to be a
scythe apprentice along with Citra Terranova. In the beginning of the story, Rowan was the 'lettuce kid'; the middle child in a large family where nobody paid him any attention. He originally believed his life had no purpose, which later lead him to accept Scythe Faraday's apprenticeship, with the hope that it could give his life some meaning. After Faraday self-gleaned and Scythe Goddard took over Rowan's training, he tried his best to stay a truly good person, but becomes what
Faraday referred to as a killing machine. In the end, Rowan found himself making the world a better place again
through the murders of corrupt Scythes.
“I got a couple of brothers that are the meat, a few sisters that are the cheese and tomatoes, so I guess I’m the lettuce.” - Rowan, page 15
This quote shows that he’s from a large family, who don’t give him much attention.
“He had dark hair and light
freckled skin. He stood up when
he saw her, and Citra could see that his suit revealed a little too much of his socks.”
His suit pants were too small, this could mean he hadn’t worn it for a while and had grown since. It shows that he was an unimportant boy with no occasion to wear a suit.
“Rowan was nervous, he just didn’t want to admit it. He knew admitting it would make Citra more worried, which would make him more worried”.
This shows that Rowan is a caring individual, who would rather appear strong for someone, than show his true feelings and worry others.
“You stood your ground for a boy you barely knew. You comforted him at the moment of his death, bearing the pain of the jolt. You bore witness, even though no one called you to do so.”
This shows that other characters saw that he was compassionate and caring to even strangers, and that he had a high morality.
One major character vs society conflict in Scythe is when the entire Scythedom is against Citra and Rowan, forcing the winner of the apprenticeship to glean the other because they were being too friendly instead of making it a proper competition. This is created through the narrative convention of conflict.
This event is significant since it was the foundation for many other conflicts later on in the book, such as Faraday self-gleaning so that they would be released of their apprenticeship. It was mainly significant to Citra and Rowan because of their romantic feelings for eachother, as neither wanted to kill the other.
"Rowan knew he could not kill Citra. And the only way to avoid the possibility would be to throw the competition; to perform so poorly between
now and the final conclave that they had
no choice but to grant scythehood to
Citra."
This quote shows how much the conflict influenced Rowan, making him perform poorly in order for Citra to win, so that he wouldn't have to glean her
"I am going to die.
Eight more months. He would see his seventeenth birthday, but not much more."
The conflict had many effects on Rowan, one of which was that he'd decided he was going to die in the final conclave, either by Citra, or his own hand. After a while Rowan decided that he'd try his best in the competition, and if he won, his first act as a scythe would be to self-glean
"And then maybe he would glean himself as his first and only act. Then he’d never be faced with having to glean Citra."
This conflict shapes the character developement of Rowan Damisch by making him not want to become a scythe, and making him think it would be the end of his life. He had planned for his whole life to end by the third conclave, and all he could do is wait for death, similar to those in the mortal age.
"Admittedly, Rowan was afraid to die, but what he feared more than death
were the depths that he now knew he was capable of reaching. "
Though this conflict, Rowan Damisch learned many things. First of all, it lead to Citra and Rowan admitting their feelings for eachother. In the long term however, it made Rowan see the true value in life, value that is lost to the immortal.
Even through his training with
Scythe Goddard, Rowan tried his
best to remain good at heart for
Citra. When she found a way past
gleaning him, he could have gone
home to continue his life, but instead
he began murdering corrupt scythes as
a way to end corruption in the Scythedom, becoming the world-known Scythe Lucifer.
