Diversity Project

by Kaley Morris

1995

1995

I was born on October 1, 1995!

2000

2000

In the fall of 2000, I started kindergarten at the age of five. School was the first place I saw diversity. Up until that point I had not traveled out of my house, so I had never seen anyone else but my family. Seeing all of the different people, I did not know what to think. I had an African American girl in my class. At first I thought she was weird because of her skin color, but she became one of my closest friends in elementary school. This first experience taught me not to judge people based on how they look but to treat everyone equally.

2010

When I was in the eighth grade, I went to a youth camp that was all about missionary work called FUGE. During this week, I was put in a group that went to an apartment complex meant for low-income families. We put on a "backyard Bible school" for the children in the neighborhood. That particular location had many African Americans. We were able to talk and minister to children who had never seen a Bible. It was a great experience. We also visited an African American church. That changed my view entirely! They were loud and hardly sat down and was always praying out loud! I loved it. They were able to let go and just praise the Lord at church. It was a shock to me, because I grew up in this church where no one openly praised in church. It gave me a different perspective on how to look at religion.

2015

2015

I graduated high school in 2014, but I did not start my job at McDonald's until 2015. I had no idea what to expect my first day. I had not lived in Athens before and did not know anyone. It was filled with Hispanic employees, and I had not done well in my Spanish class in high school. When I have trouble understanding a customer, one of my employees comes to the rescue. They are even teaching me some words and phrases in Spanish. I am glad they are expanding my knowledge about other cultures.

Today

The Future

I hope to use all of these experiences to help me as I become a teacher. I want to be able to understand the cultures and backgrounds all of my students and include everyone. Diversity is a great thing!
