Piripkura tribe

A tribe from the Amazon

Done by Albert Brulles and Marta Goula

When and why was founded?

Foundation

We don't really know much about the Piripkuras, as they are a society that has no contact with our modern soicety.

It is estimated that this tribe was founded in 6000 a.C because of the massive migration because of the last glacial era. But they were first "found" in the 1500's.

When the miscegenation started, because of the Portuguese people, some of the indigenous moved into the forest mostly to escape enslavement, unwanted marriages or to preserve the bloodlines.

The ones who moved away from that society, started creating their own ones. And one of them was the Piripikuras named like these by their "neighbors" as Butterfly men as they were and still are nomads.

Where do they live?

Location

The Piripkura tribe live near the Amazon, in Mato Grosso, a state from Brasil.

Mato Grosso is an area that for years has been illegally invaded and destroyed, by logging and for meat production. They don't have a specific place inside the state because they are nomads. That is why they are also called the butterfly man.

The Piripkura tribe live near other tribes like the Yawalapitis and the Aritana. Tribes that are in constant war with the Piripkura.

Differneces between our societies

Differences

The principal differences between our two societies are :

1-They are nomads, they don't stay in the same place for long, and their assentments are made quick and easily.

2-They are nearly always naked, or with little to no clothes due to the hot temperatures.

3-They have their own traditions, very different from ours

Do communities help preserve tradition and culture?

Community help

Some of the loggers and farmers are trying to end up the environment of the Pirikpuras, but some ONG's are trying to help them. Also, our community doesn't help very much because nobody knows how bad are the Piripkuras going nowadays and they are almost extinct. That is why our community should help more all this tribes to don't disappear because they are just a community as ours that lives in the Amazon. Just because they live in the forest, they are not worse than us and a lot of people doesn't understand that.

But there are also some people that tries to help a lot these tribes as we can see in this photo.

How does the enviroment affect this community ?

Environment

The enviroment they usually are affects them by making them collect their own food, water and materials they need. They do not need of clothes, or just the bare minimum becaus ethey are in the jungle. But sadly these enviroment is changing becasue of the explotation a Brazilian forests to produce food or have more space, is taking away from them their tipical enviroment.

They are really important because if they didn't exist, nearly all amazonas would be already distroyed.

Members of Piripkura

Members

Nowadays, there are only 3 members in Piripkura: Tamandua, Baita y Rita. Tamandua and Baita are mens and Rita is a women.

Because of the wars against other tribes and the loggers and farmers who are encroaching on their territory, they are in danger of extinction. Even if they are protected by the government, the extinction is almost there if the loggers and farmers don't stop cutting down trees.

There are also some invaders that are trying to kill Tamandua and Baita to end the Piripkuras.

Our opinion

Opinion

Marta: I think it is really sad that this tribe that has been there for so much longer that us is going to dissapear because our egoism as a community.

We should learn form our mistakes and don't let the other resting tribes have the same luck as them.

Albert: I think that this tribe, as other tribes in South America, is living a rough moment because our community is destroying all her resources and home. We need to stop looking just to ourselves and start looking for others too. Even if they are protected, there are some farmers that destroy their home illegally and that should stop because in some years it won't be any tribe.
