Introduction

Saudi Aramco is the world's biggest incorporated oil and gas organization; its upstream activities are situated in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and it additionally works a worldwide downstream business and it's includes several important departments. One of them is Operations Accounting Department which is included in the Controllers organization.

Our scope:

Looking into data management function and evaluating the data maturity of the Operation Accounting department which are

• Data warehouse and business intelligence.
• Data Quality
• Data Governance.

The Interaction approach

We decided to gather our needed information by interviewing.

Position/Role: The Operations accounting manager

After gathering and analyzing the answers , we evaluate each category by the maturity levels so, on their

• “Data Quality” 5 because they managed their data very well aligned with the tools their using to make sure of the quality and the performance of their data according to the standards plus, the people and resources they have are highly specialists in the field.
• “Data warehouse and business intelligence" 5 because they managed their data storage aligned with the company wide standards that every huge company is following, and they have high level of control for every unit to reduce the risks.
• “Data Governance” 5 because they also have a highly control and a very well management over their data privacy, performance and most importantly security.

Business drivers for the assessment

• Company policies and regulations.
• Chosen data-driven organization types: Data Quality, Data Governance and Data warehouse and business intelligence.
• Internal business drivers: IT staff, departments within the organization.
• To evaluate and measure the efficiency of the data used in their company.

Overall results of the assessment

The company has lots of strengthens:

• They are monitoring their performance by doing an assessment quarterly and at year end.
• Security and safety to accessing building, systems, and data.
• They create programs to improve their data quality, also they have Data governance program that was built in house.
• They preform training to the employees abut dealing with the systems and data.

Overall results of the assessment

All of these strengthens factors will increase the professionally of managing and dealing with data governance, quality and Data warehouse and business intelligence, which will improve the company performance. We found that there are no weaknesses and gaps in Aramco company, they have very high level of standards because it's the number one company in the world in the oil and gas industry. Wherefore, we don’t have recommendations or suggestions to solve problems or fill gaps.

Discussion

To summarize this project our team members were exercising equal responsibilities, working towards the desired goal achieving of evaluating data management maturity of a data-driven organization in all of the “Data governance, Data Quality and Data warehouse and business intelligence" aspects and deliver the work on time. Also, having an experience in a real work environment has been a really exciting and it encourage us to develop our capabilities and work on ourselves to get there one day.

Lessons Learned

• We learned how to conduct interviews that will help us gather appropriate information to support our project.
• Figure out the strengths and fixing any issues that might be existed on their data manipulations.
• Assess the level of maturity and efficiency of the organization according to their response.
• Apply our instructor’s feedback at each stage has been instrumental in improving the project.

Challenges has been faced

• We had difficulty finding a company to interview them.
• Searching for suitable and clear questions away from the company's data privacy so that the company can answer them.
• Schedule for the interview since we're students.
