John Proctor
John Proctor is a hardworking farmer. He is a husband and father to 16 children. Unfortunatly for him, John is hiding a dirty little secret of his own. His wife Elizabeth Proctor loves and respects him although she knows he is still human and makes Human mistakes.
Proctor's main value is his honesty. This is ironic considering the fact that he commited adultry and the only ones who know are the other adulterer, his wife and himself. His honesty also does not allow him to confess to witchcraft that neither he nor his wife had done. This ultimately lead to them both being imprisoned and later hanged.
The Crucible is like a clasic tragical storyin which John Proctor as the play's "hero" per se. He is seen as honest, upright, and blunt spoken. Proctor is a good man but one with a big secret secret that becomes his fatal flaw.
Honesty At all Costs

"Abby, I may think of you softly from time to time. But I will cut off my hand before I’ll ever reach for you again. Wipe it out of mind. We never touched, Abby."
"Because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life! Because I lie and sign myself to lies! Because I am not worth the dust on the feet of them that hang! How may I live without my name? I have given you my soul; leave me my name!"
"You are pulling Heaven down and raising up a whore!"
