The Columbian Exchange: History of Rice

By Renoira Reid

Oryza sativa japonica rice was first discovered in China’s Yangtze River where a group of hunter-gatherers began growing rice. These rice leaves have a part called phytoliths; are hard, microscopic pieces of silica made by plant cells for self-defense. that doesn't burn, digest, or decompose. Archaeologists have discovered the specific patterns remains of phytoliths in artifacts and soil dating back thousands of years at a site called Shangshan. Rice was domesticated about 12,000 years ago. The scientific term for rice is Oryza Sativa.

Old World

shipped to the New World with African slaves.

1685

The New Word

originated here

1520's The Portuguese and Spanish brought it to Brazil and mexico.

Where did rice originate from?

The Columbian Exchange

1450-1750s

What date did the it spread to the west thourgh the Columbian Exchange?

It spread to the New World through the Colombian Exchange in 1685 with influnce of Europeans, Asian rice varieties had spread across West Africa on coastal plantations. Africa had their own strain called Oryza sativa before any outside exchange. Both types of rice were shipped with the slaves in order to feed their colonies in the New World.

It first came to the West in present-day South Carolina and spread throughout the New World. By the 18th Century, Rice had already spread from the east westward and was evident in Europe, Asia, and most of Africa prior to its arrival to the Americas

How profitable was it?

Where did it spread after the Columbian Exchange?

Rice cultivation caused an agricultural revolution for America. It was used for exporting. Europeans used West African Slaves to their advantage because they knew how to cultivate rice. It is a plantation crop because it was used for exporting, not profit.

Who profited from it?

Europe profited from rice because of the success from the New World.

The Americas were on high and they wanted more West African slaves because they brought prior knowledge and technology into growing rice.

Labor Practices

How was this item incorporated into the culture of a new group of people in the 1450-1750 period?

How did it Impact Labor systems?

The one example of rice incorporated into Culture was in South Carolina slaves were forced to tend the crops using their poir knowledge but they also brought diseases they were immune to, but not the Europeans. This led to the demand of slaves in the slave trade.

Another example of incorporation was when european diets started to change. Rice became an added crop to the New World.

Environmental Impacts

The cultivation of rice from the old world to the new world brought room for diseases to spread. West African slaves brought malaria to the new world.

What environmental impacts did it bring?
